Treating with natural medicine.
Updated: Jun 18, 2019
This morning, promptly at 5am (it’s never a decent hour, is it?) my 3 year old woke up crying that his ear hurt. I’m not going to lie, my first reaction was a deep sigh... not because I was annoyed. Not because I wanted to go back to sleep.
No. You see, we have been in the process of building a tiny house. We spent 6 months living in a camper, and to be perfectly honest, some of our things are still in the camper. My ear oil was one of those things. Said camper is across the 7 acres from our house now. (Eye roll. Sigh.) I wasn’t ABOUT to trek over there in the dark at 5am.
Welp, now I was awake. My mind was spinning trying to decide what I could do. I got up after a few minutes of snuggling him, diluted some tea tree, lavender, and clove oils, grabbed a dose of hylands homeopathic cough medicine (to help his mucous) and went and rubbed the oils on the outside around his ear, and on his chest.
That didn’t touch it quite the way I’d hoped, but it held us off until the sun started to peak. I got dressed at 6:30, trekked across the property, and grabbed the ear oil, the probiotic mushroom tincture blend, and Motrin.
I know, I know. I NEVER use Tylenol. (Blog on that to come.) And I rarely use Motrin....never for a fever. But he wasn’t running fever, and I know how bad ear infections hurt. I have minor hearing loss from 3 massive double ear infections I had in 2012. So for this, I gave him one single dose of pain relief. I dropped a few drops of ear oil in his ear, and gave him a mouthful of the mushroom blend. Then two 500mg vitamin c’s.
I messaged his teacher that we were stopping on the way to school to pick up colloidal silver. (Did I mention I’m an overachiever?!) He got a few drops in the ear, and a dose in the mouth.
When I messaged his teacher she said FOUR other children had called out for ear aches that morning. Two were there by the time we got there, already on antibiotics and still pulling at their ears. This was about 3 hours after his pain started, and he already was his normal, chatty, happy self, completely pain free. He didn’t have another problem today, not even at nap.

I don’t say this to make it out like I’m better. How many parents would take care of it at home if they could? And yes, I know I used a lot, and it’s not cheap. It has taken me years to build up my natural medicine cabinet, and it’s still not where I want it. But it worked faster, and didn’t wreak havoc on his little body. A doctor’s visit isn’t needed for every single thing. In fact, it is rarely needed. My kids might go once a year.
Today when we got home, I put 1/4t bentonite clay in his juice to help him detox. Then I made some homemade chicken noodle soup, complete with organic bone broth, garlic, cilantro, cayenne, fresh mushrooms, onions, rainbow carrots, and parsley. He will get more hylands, vitamin c, and ear oil before bed to be safe, but no more complaints of pain have been heard.
Empower yourself to treat your kids at home. You CAN do it, and you’d be surprised how much better it works.
